dont you think that sherlock holmsing the “hook” makes cookie cutter songs like britney spears and the like?
They’re pretty catchy, but the mean nothing and say little.
The focus shifts from making music for the sake of making music to making music for a sale.
When I write things I care about, the songs are beautiful and the hooks are MEAN!
I think it can but it doesn’t have to. Because my focus is mainly on “the enternal hook”. Something that lasts longer than a season–which automatically disqualifies cookie cutter songs AND britney spears from my argument for and definition of ‘head-turning hooks”.
:)
And writing a song isn’t only “making music for the sake of making music”. Because there is another outcome to the song and that’s to communicate an idea to a listener. So I think it’s important to integrate the collective into songwriting.
Well I dont know how it occurs for others, but when I write, its generally with the world in mind, so the songs end up speaking to people - there is a messege inherent to the song, because it isnt forced. It just becomes, as a result of the singing from within that is there all the time - like a hum, a bean, a rhythm my life moves to.
We all vibrate a certain thing, each of us differently, and so when we sing, that song is merely a “cruder” representation of what already we are. I say cruder, because its manifested. A thought is always lighter.
I hope that makes sense.
I am in the process of recording some stuff. I’ll post and let you know !
Remember that I’m trying to explain how to write a “hit hook”. The focus of that article is about writing a hit song with a perenial hook – something that will last a lot longer than Britney ever will :)
And that article is also focused on the craft of songwriting, not the absolute emptiness from which all songs come. Most of my readers need to know the rules and conventions of songwriting before they go breaking them :)
Plus, I believe that if more people with a higher consciousness, like yourself, were writing hit songs and reaching the masses, the world would be a much better place!
Thanks for the great conversation, Katya.

Where’s your music? I’d love to listen :)
